The Tea Party movement must be stopped now

I've tried to ignore their babbling for as long as possible, but it turns out ignorance is contagious. The Tea Party movement, according to a recent poll, is "viewed favorably" by 1/3 of Americans. 40 percent have not heard of the movement or like me, plug their ears when people start talking crazy. So please, allow me to educate you.

It’s not that the Tea Party is too Conservative or too Libertarian. No, the Tea Party has the political ideology of an angry old man: taxes are too high, the government’s too big, and President Obama is a socialist. This is political speech at its best.

Last week’s Tea Party Convention in Nashville, Tennessee, kicked off with former Congressman and 2008 Republican presidential candidate Tom Tancredo’s heated declaration that Barack “Hussein” Obama was elected because “we do not have a civics, literacy test before people can vote. People who could not even spell the word vote, or say it in English, put a committed socialist ideologue in the White House.”

Tancredo makes an interesting proposal in saying that we should have a civics or literacy test before allowing American citizens the right to vote. But, having actually taken a civics class, I remember learning that we already tried that once. We ditched literacy tests when we realized they were incredibly racist. We could try giving civics lessons to all voters, but that would probably be too “socialist” for the Tea Party.

Tancredo’s not the only Tea Party supporter throwing around the S-word. Judson Phillips, the founder of Tea Party Nation and organizer of the convention, called the opening speech “fantastic” and agrees with Tancredo’s belief that Obama is a Socialist. Several forwarded emails I’ve received from ultraconservative friends confirm that Obama received the endorsement of the New Party, a social democratic political party, in his 1996 Senate campaign. The President denies the allegations.

Even if Obama was a member of the New Party, social democracy is not synonymous with socialism. To name just a couple differences, social democracy does not advocate political revolution or government control of private industries. Social democrats are really just liberal democrats. They want a mixed economy, fair trade, civil liberties and social justice. Social democracy doesn’t really equate with the image of bread lines and sad violin music that Tea Party supporters hope to conjure when they call Obama a Socialist.

We don’t even have to analyze the president’s alleged affiliations to understand his politics. Just look at his budget proposal. Obama’s plan would commercialize the space industry, moving space flight operations from NASA to private contractors. That’s not socialism. That’s a wise policy decision to cut out nonessential programs in order to provide other resources to the public.

Even if President Obama secretly wants a socialized healthcare system, that doesn’t make him a Socialist. The Tea Party’s finger-pointing agenda scares people away from making an honest judgment about what services the government should provide for free. As many as 77 percent of Americans believe healthcare should be a right, and I don’t think many Americans would say the same about space exploration. Shouldn’t a government “for the people” ensure the rights of its citizens before indulging the curiosity of a few? That’s not socialism. That’s common sense.

And while some Tea Party supporters say that the president has already converted America into a socialist state, others, such as Sarah Palin, complain that Obama hasn’t done enough since being in office. “How’s that hope-y, change-y stuff workin’ out for you?” The former GOP vice presidential nominee quipped in her speech at the Nashville convention.

So which is it? Too much or not enough? The president can’t just change whatever he wants. Contrary to what the Tea Party says, the United States is still a democracy, and the legislature is responsible for legislating. As long as our Congress mirrors the division among us, the represented, we will not see change, regardless of who is president.

The Tea Party movement is proving that there are a lot of STUPID AMERICANS out there, and that one corrupt filthy rich lobbyist can PLAY these IDIOTS like a BAD DREAM.

They WILL NOT in the end be successful, because the TRUE MAJORITY of AMERICANS are NOT IGNORANT, and WE will NOT let them take OUR COUNTRY!

Do you HEAR THAT TEA PARTY FOOLS? That is a DIRECT CHALLENGE!

BRING IT ON JERKS!

To tell you the truth there are good and bad points on both sides of this issue. Why not compromise? That is the way labor unions work.

I probably know more about what is going on with health care than any of you, so I am going to share my knowledge with you. When an individual robs a store and gets caught he goes to jail. When these thieving hospitals and doctors rob the insurance companies nobody seems to know or care and do you know why? Well, children let me teach you something. Years ago, my daughter had an outpatient operation to remove a ganglion cyst from one of her wrists. Ok, she was in the doctors office for about an hour. Ok, when I received the insurance forms that showed how long she had been in the doctors office, it showed she had been in the hospital for four days and gotten all kinds of treatments that I didn't even understand. I called my insurance company and reported it to them but they said they had already paid the bill and it was a dead issue. So, I can understand why the insurance rates are increasing. You know the thieving doctors and hospitals don't even get a slap on the wrist. It is a travesty of justice and yet it keeps happening. Do you see why our President wants to keep an eye on banks? We have to do something or else no one will have insurance. If you are a student of history, you will remember that President Roosevelt in 1933 passed laws to regulate certain banking business practices because of the big depression that occured in the 1920's. Our President is doing the best he can and since the republicans won't work with him he has to do it by himself. President Obama sees that this country can't function very much longer the way that George Bush left it. Speaking of george this is my own unbiased opinion of how he bought the Texas Rangers. Do you remember the Silverado Savings and Loan bailout in California some years ago. Do you remember who was one of the major officers at that establishment. It was Neil Bush, one of the brothers of George W. Bush. Well, Neil never went to prison because he was the son of the Vice-President at that time, George Herbert Bush. Oh, by the way, it cost billions to bail out that bank and I still believe to this day that the kickbacks Neil Bush got from those bad loans bought George W. Bush, the Texas Rangers. They had to launder the money some way and this was a way to do it. Oh, and by the way, remember, John Hinckley, the man that tried to assisinate President Ronald Reagan. Did you know that he was a good friend of the Bush family and that his brother had actually made loans with Neil. Talk about coup de tat. I still will believe that George Herbert Bush wanted the presidency so bad he didn't care how he got it. Make up a story about John Hinckley wanting to impress Jodie Foster, the movie star. The story was concocted to make John Hinckley appear to be insane and when John gets out of the looney bin he will have his millions waiting for him by the Bush family, or the money may already be in a Swiss bank account waiting for John. You know we already really live in a socialist state. What is social security: thank you President Roosevelt. If people had listened to George W. Bush and put their money in their own private acccounts it would be gone now, thanks to AIG and a few others. People can' t you see the writing on the wall. Listen, if our utilities were not regulated you would not be able to pay your utility bills. Same with gasoline. This use to be a country where men looked out for each other and now its a mess. The beginning of the end of this country was when we let industry move overseas. I hear talk radion show hosts talking about if we lowered taxes on companies, they would come back to the United States. No, they wouldn't, because they would have to pay higher wages so that will never happen. I could go on and on and on but I am running out of computer.

Well... you all say a few interesting things. The babbler is right for saying Jessie made some uninformed comments.

But... he's also a tool. Obama is not a socialist. Richard Nixon, you fools, was incredibly adamant about making a healthcare bill. By the way, your pal George tried to reform social security. The reason? We need these social programs and politicians know it. I know what you want tea partiers. I just hope that in ten years, you can afford to send your kids to private schools (because the public ones will be toast), are able to somehow scrounge up the money to get decent medical care (doubtful), and will be able to eat in an imploded economy.

I am a true liberal. But the problem with politics is how devisive we are. Babbler, we are so enamored of our respective camps, and so entrenched in this fight, that honestly the only thing we can do is fire our salvos and sit back. I know. But I'd really like to get past that. I admit, I feel like there is so much on the line, that frankly, I don't feel like pontificating/debating/dancing around it. I want to fight.

The last thing I will say is this: you dummies have been screaming, "we want reform! Just not YOUR reform!" Admit it guys, you had 8 YEARS TO DO IT. Get with the program. Good luck taking away everything that American's rely on. I can't wait to see what the roads and infrastructure of America look like when your done with her.

My father is an insurance broker. He does employee benefit plans for large companies (healthcare). He told me, "Ryan, I sure as hell hope they get this bill passed. Because if our % GNP that goes to healthcare keeps rising, the system will implode. You'll be sipping coffee and ripping cigs all day and getting government handouts in your little studio apartment." That's right folks- if we don't reform Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security and healthcare, we're going towards socialism anyhow. ASK ANYONE WHO KNOWS ANYTHING ABOUT THE MONEY OUR COUNTRY SPENDS ON HEALTHCARE EVERY YEAR. Even single payer systems, like Canada or European nations, pay way,way less!

Yeah, that's right- Keep thinking that right wingers are all idiots, angry old white men- Keep thinking that the gigantic braintrust made up of multiple generations of Conservative scholars, statesmen, authors & philosophers are all dummies, all white guys, all just grumblers. Keep pretending that no one of any consequence is listening to the Tea Party message, and that those who do are just pinheads, and that people like William Buckley, Frederick Douglas and Edmund Burke are not now being echoed by the Tea Party intellectuals & the common man alike. And above all- keep pretending the 'BO' is not a Socialist.

That's super! You guys are making this soooo easy, and that's why taking back the good old USA is soooo much fun this time. I was at the rally at the Alamo, where my cousin Byrd Lockhart was under the command of Col. William Travis in the Revolution of 1836 and did his part to secure Liberty from another petty tyrant who kicked around another great Constitution, the Mexican Constitution of 1824. And as I stood in the crowd as we sang hymns of war and peace both, prayed to the Lord for Texas and the rest of the Union, heard from everybody from 'Uncle' Ted Nugent to Glen Beck, I looked around me and saw one of the most racially and economically diverse crowds ever, all gathered for the same reasons, there to confirm and exchange ideas.

And I have rarely seen a more positive, forward looking crowd, great ideas, lots of optimism. We're having too much fun. Stop the tea party movement? LMAO- oh that's rich- Let's see, race baiting hasn't seemed to stop it, slander hasn't stopped it, name calling ie; 'Tea Baggers' hasn't stopped it, under counting the numbers at the rallies hasn't stopped it, the old / legacy Media can't seem to stop it, all the usual tactics by the usual suspects *snooze*, but now, not with the usual results!

Maybe be truly open minded and spend 60 days and really listen to the full cycle of ideas Limbaugh Show, to Glen Beck, to Bill Bennet, the moderate who has a great morning show, listen, for once, to somebody but yourself, be a true Liberal and listen to the sages of the day, even if you dont like their 'Style'. THEN make your judgement in a truly unbiased way. Dare ya. Got the guts? Hmmmm? What would Aristotle do? Think hard! You can do it! ok, ok, I'll give you a hint: He would say [paraphrasing] that regardless of what you think of someone personally, if they speak the truth you are obliged to listen, and then pass that truth, however personally distasteful, along to everyone else you can possibly find.

Good Luck-

Just because someone has an alternative point of view doesn't mean they are less intelligent than thou, and in my humble opinion, Jessie, it seems as if you are a "blabber" who doesn't understand the concerns of the American public.

It's a crying shame that some people in this amazing country are dead set on corrupting the very liberal principles it was founded upon. The Tea Party movement is organic, as it has sought to put our country back on track, following the Constitution. Jessie, I think you need to take a class on Constitutional Law. Although the Tea Party may not be the most elite group of people in America, there certainly are in touch with our founders.

But it is true that "taxes are too high, the government’s too big, and President Obama is a socialist.". So I don't understand your entire point of view. I am somehow "babbling" if I say the government is too big? Then you are somehow "idiotic" when you say it is not. How does that move the discourse forward? I think you convict yourself. I suggest you see an exorcist and have him get rid of that "thrill" that ran up your leg and burrowed into your brain. Besides, that thrill belongs to Chris Matthews, and he needs it back.
The only thing you said that I agree with is "As long as our Congress mirrors the division among us, the represented, we will not see change, regardless of who is president." So watch the 2010 and 2012 elections to see what we do about that.

"...taxes are too high, the government’s too big, and President Obama is a socialist..."

But taxes ARE way too high, the government IS way too big, but Obama's not a socialist...he's a communist!

Let me guess, Jessie. You’re what? Nineteen? Twenty? Never worked a day in your life and believe every piece of BS your lefty professors hand you. Come back and talk to us in twenty years or so…thank god I’ll be dead and your socialist government will crumble from its own weight.

"Obama’s plan would commercialize the space industry, moving space flight operations from NASA to private contractors. That’s not socialism. That’s a wise policy decision to cut out nonessential programs in order to provide other resources to the public."

Because one of our countries first priorities are to cut NASAs budget... and let the International Space Station just crash in 10 years. Yep that's Obama Politics for you, take a truly international project that has incredible potential and let it sink into the ocean. Instead we need ObamaCare that will socialize Health, lower quality, increase delays and he won't even *really* make it inter-state competitive.

"As many as 77 percent of Americans believe healthcare should be a right"
If the question was phrased, "Do you believe the government should provide health care for every citizen" I can guarantee you it wouldn't be 77%. Don't twist poll results to fallaciously prove a point. I can tell you that recent polls show well below 50% approval for Congress's health care plan. The truth is that the average american doesn't want what the Democrat's cooked up with their supermajority. They have figured out that the back-door deals are wrong and that we need to start over.

Don't get me wrong, as a country we desperately NEED a comprehensive health care bill. But we also need to restart, keeping back-door deals and other unnecessary fluff is something the American people do not want, and law makers need to realize that. This issue needs to NOT be an all-or-nothing bill. Obama has plenty of time to propose additions to it if necessary, but we do need something passed soon

Stop making excuses for this horrid inexperienced puppet president who is getting his marching orders from George Soros.

Health care is about control, not care.

Obama is worse than a socialist, because he is in bed with the corporations that would enslave us.
He is a fascist.

Sorry but that's the truth, and would be if he were white too.
This has nothing to do with race, but ideologies.
And we don't like his...he's a progressive and that's downright dangerous.
