Living in a time of hatred and racially motivated violence does not seem to be within the popular consciousness of people in this country and of time period. Students were able to hear first-person accounts of people who’ve experienced these ordeals when survivors of the Rwandan Genocide and the Holocaust came to speak at the University on Monday, March 8.
Renovations to The University’s Recreation Center are spurring animosity among students due to reduced access to the gym.
The SGA Senate had another long, but productive, meeting on Tuesday night. They began by electing three new Senators: Ben Timlichman, a history major from Queens, Jude Greenspan, a marketing major from Connecticut, and Tara Khoshbin, a management major from Los Angeles. The Senate also re-elected Akanksha Mittal, a marketing major from Africa.
Author Mona Simpson read excerpts from her upcoming novel, “My Hollywood,” on Wednesday, March 10 the Guthart Cultural Center Theater. The novel, to be released in August, has two voices, that of a middle-aged Filipino nanny, Lola, and her Californian employer. Simpson manages to capture Lola’s patois authentically through simple language and profound images.
The fire in an off-campus house that occurred last week sparked the question of why the University does not sponsor off-campus housing for Greek organizations. Many members of sororities and fraternities want it and think it would not only be a safer arrangement but that it would be beneficial to Greek life as a whole.
The final total for the University’s Hofstra for Haiti fundraising and matching campaign is in. $13,300 was raised through student and staff donations. The University matched that, bringing the total to $26,600.
As Hofstra Concerts rushes around to set up on Thursday nights for their coffee house series, Brian Shoicket calmly stands in the center of the noisy room and directs the crew. As president of the club, Shoicket is in a charge of all events, including the newly reinvented coffee house series.
For senior Anthony Crisci, and sophomore Christian Fuscarino, The University is the perfect place to have The Pride Network in full force. The club that was founded just two years ago is a club that is growing in popularity, as they act as advocates for the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender community (GBLT), as well as educators to anyone and everyone willing to learn more.
A deer carcass was found on the hood of a vehicle parked in the Nassau/Suffolk Parking Lot on March 3. A staff member, who saw the carcass in the morning, notified Public Safety. The student owner of the vehicle was contacted and questioned by Public Safety. The student stated that he was not aware of the carcass on his vehicle and did not know who would put it there. The Plant Department removed the deer from the vehicle.
